Avoiding the Gynecologist (continued from page 5)

tion, since every woman is different. It discusses how to use odor and taste as a diagnostic tool. It also describes the normal changes in the amount and consistency of secretions during the menstrual cycle and sexual arousal.

If a woman finds it necessary to visit a physician or clinic, the book provides helpful information on how to find a good doctor or clinic and what to expect during her visit. It describes the types of questions a woman should ask in choosing a health care professional, when to schedule an appointment (for example, during the first part of her menstrual cycle if she's going for a Pap smear), and the typical medical procedures and testing she may undergo.

All of this information is supplemented by excellent photographs, illustrations, and charts. There is also a glossary of medical terms that women should be familiar with when they visit a private physician or clinic and even an order blank for a plastic speculum. and a 'How to Do a Self-Exam" cassette tape.

How To Stay Out of the Gynecologist's Office is an impressive documentation of the wisdom gained in the first decade of the women's health movement. It displays a deep respect for women's ability to understand and control their health care. It is rough in spots, and it did not answer what to me is a very important question:. Are regular Pap smears.

necessary, and if so, how can women who do not have access to a self-help clinic or a laboratory perform their own? But when I think of all the questions that doctors leave unanswered, I am not disappointed.

being gay. If my brothers' abuse had scared me away from men, I would never have been able to enjoy the relationship I had when I was 20. I was/am gay strictly because that's the way I choose to be, not because of what my brothers had done to me.

At that time I had gotten involved with a woman. At first the relationship was very good. She was aware of what had happened to me as a child and could understand why I had trouble expressing my feelings. About a year into this relationship, I finally accepted that I still had problems. The relationship ended, and I decided that I needed more counselling. I joined the incest victims' group at the Free Clinic about a year ago and have since moved into individual counselling with a woman who was coleader of that group. My life is not nearly as dramatic as it was four years ago. I'm learning to express my feelings, and things are definitely looking up.

She knew what she wanted...

Amelia Earhart, president of the 99's, women pilots' organization, poses with three members for a benefit roller skating party held in 1933 to raise funds for a plane. Left to right: Earhart (1897-1937) often expressed that women can and must take on challenges. She set an example in her love of flying, as she said, "for the fun of it". Elvy Kalep, the first civilian pilot in Estonia, created aviation books and toys, and was an artist and linguist; Frances Marsalis (ca. 1890-1934), racing pilot, set the endurance record of 10 days aloft; Betty Gilles (b. 1908) demonstrated and sold planes, and was a commander in the WASPS. These women made a major contribution to herstory, because they knew who they were and what they wanted. WHAT SHE WANTS, Cleveland's only women's newspaper, records the events and issues that are created by women who are making herstory today.
